EHN Board President Barb Wilkie was very ill from chemically-induced kidney disease for several years. She passed away May 31, 2011. EHN presents this site both as a tribute and as valuable information. Many links and references will be out of date but Barb's research holds up over time. Suggestions for Accommodation at School

 

Here is an example of one school's changes to create a welcoming environment for a student who was looking for a safe place to go to school. (This is a small private school.)

 

1. Change cleaning agent to TSP and water
2. Polish floor with a cleaning pad and no buffing agents
3. Replace all spray bottle cleaners with vinegar and water
4. Remove all urinal blocks and items with fragrance in lavs
5. Replace scented soaps with fragrance-free soaps
6. Remove all cleaners and waxes from the building to reduce the chance of accidental use
7. Wash and rinse all floors with a solution of water to remove any residual cleaning agents
8. Teachers were asked to refrain from using scented personal care products
9. All dry erase markers were changed to low odor markers
10. Special vacuum cleaners were purchased to control dust emissions
11. A school assembly was held to make students aware of the need to refrain from wearing scented products.
12. Windows are open as much as possible. Student sits near open window.
13. Student can leave a class whenever he feels the necessity to do so.
